RECETO M.Sc. Merit Scholarships for M.Sc.
A number of scholarships – each DKK 30,000 – have been established to ensure that the best M.Sc. thesis work in the RECETO framework culminates in a fully developed paper that is submitted to a scientific journal. Students who are working on topics in environmental chemistry, microbiology, and toxicology within one or more RECETO research groups can apply for the scholarship at any time. See www.receto.dk
RECETO Postdoctoral Positions RECETO Ph.D.s can apply for postdoctoral positions of three to six months. The purpose of the postdoctoral programme is to strengthen collaborative research among the research groups within RECETO and to contribute to RECETO educational activities. The next application deadlines are March 1, 2008 and September 1, 2008. See
www.receto.dk
RECETO Travel Grants
RECETO Ph.D. students can at any time apply for travel grants to support their participation in Ph.D. courses abroad. See www.receto.dk
Coming board meetings:
Primo November at KU-LIFE
The agendas and minutes of board meetings are posted online at http://www.receto.dk/Organization/Board/Minutes.aspx
2. Dissertations
Since the last newsletter, a RECETO student has completed and defended her dissertation and can now claim the title of Ph.D. Congratulations to Helle!
Helle Marcussen: Contents and risks of potentially toxic elements in wastewater-fed food production systems in Southeast Asia.
Advisors: Peter E. Holm, Department of Natural Resources, and Anders Dalsgaard, Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, both at LIFE, University of Copenhagen.

3. First Appointment to a RECETO Postdoctoral Position
The first RECETO postdoctoral position has been awarded to Dr. Giorgio Tomasi at the University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE), Department of Natural Sciences. His work is carried out in cooperation with environmental research groups at the University of Copenhagen (LIFE), the University of Aarhus (National Environmental Research Institute), and Roskilde University.
Dr. Tomasi will implement and apply a number of chemometric methods to attain a more comprehensive characterization of complex environmental data and to improve the interpretation of data in global environmental surveys. In particular, he will examine the levels and sources of anthropogenic contaminants in environmental samples (fish and gastropods) that were collected during the Galathea 3 expedition of 2006.
Dr. Tomasi will also arrange and lead a two-day hands-on workshop at LIFE in the use of chemometrics in the analysis of environmental data. For more information about the workshop, contact Assistant Professor Jan H. Christensen, Department of Natural Sciences, LIFE.
4. Conferences and Symposia Relevant for RECETO
EnviroSymp-2007 "Environmental Strategies & Solutions" Symposium
Three research schools - GESS, COCGI, and RECETO - have arranged a symposium for their Ph.D. and M.Sc. students to take place on November 5-6 at the Faculty of Life Science, University of Copenhagen.
The symposium consists of three sessions: I) Sustainable energy, II) Tools and tricks to become a successful Ph.D. student, and iii) Communicate your science.
Ph.D. students affiliated with the research schools can attend free of charge. In addition, a number of free seats, on a first come, first served basis, are available for M.Sc. students who are associated with the research schools. All participants must register in advance: The deadline is October 24. See www.envirosymp.dk
International Symposium
Tenth International Symposium on Hyphenated Techniques in Chromatography and Hyphenated Chromatographic Analyzers & Tenth International Symposium on Advances in Extraction Techniques 2008. Site Oud Sint-Jan, Bruges (Belgium), January 28 - February 1, 2008.
Deadline for registrations at reduced fee and deadline for receipt of last-minute posters: December 1, 2007. See link

5. Upcoming Ph.D. Courses and Other Relevant Courses
Receptor-Mediated Toxicity
October 22-26, 2007, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden
The course aims to provide state-of-the-art knowledge of toxicological mechanisms mediated by endocrine disrupters to Ph.D. students, post-docs, senior scientists and other professionals.
Course topics: Molecular mechanisms of hormone receptor signalling
Signalling pathways targeted by endocrine disrupting chemicals
Emerging techniques to identify and screen for endocrine disrupters
Mode-of-action implications in risk assessment
It is organized by RA-COURSES, a project funded by European Union Marie Curie Actions, in collaboration with CASCADE Network of Excellence and the Postgraduate programme in Environmental Factors and Health at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. Ph.D. students and post docs can apply for funding of travel, subsistence, and course fee, but the registration deadline has passed.
See www.cascadenet.org/~RA-COURSES and www.cascadenet.org
Bioinformatics for environmental scientists
An introduction to processing of data from various biological and biomolecular methods: A 5-day intensive M.Sc. and Ph.D. course in Helsinki, January 7-11, 2008. The course is arranged by NOVA and is designed for about 25 participants.
The course itself and materials are free of charge, but students must arrange and pay for their own accommodations. M.Sc. participants who are visitors to Helsinki can apply for a NordPlus express mobility grant (500 € for Islandic students, 300 € for others). See the SoilSoc homepage.
AQUAbase - Two day public Workshop on Mitigation Technologies on 27-28 November, 2007
In recent years micropollutants such as pharmaceutical and endocrine disrupting compounds have been identified in the aquatic environment. Most of these substances derive from domestic and industrial applications and are continuously discharged into surface waters via wastewater treatment plants. To date, conventional wastewater treatment concepts are not sufficient to degrade or retain all these substances. Therefore, comprehensive research effort is dedicated to the development of appropriate treatment processes for the safe removal of micropollutants.
In this context, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, will host a two day public Workshop on Mitigation Technologies on 27-28 November, 2007. The event is organised in the frame of the EU funded project AQUAbase which develops interdisciplinary concepts for the removal of organic micropollutants from the aquatic environment.
