NOVA SoilSoc PhD course: Sustainable use of tropical soils (ECTS: 5)
Time: October 23-November 6, 2010
Place: Awassa, Ethiopia
Description: Nordic students will be taken to Ethiopia to study tropical soils - degradation, use and rehabilitation - in an authentic setting. By lectures, excursions and lab work the students will be familiarized with soil chemistry, physics and biology as well as with agricultural production, ecology and social aspects of land use. The course site is Awassa in the Great Rift Valley and the time is late October 2010. Ethiopian students and teachers will participate and contribute with local expertise to create academic partnership. The course including travel will last for 14 d.

Course fee:
NOVA students (PhD and applicable MSc), and domestic MSc students - no fee.
Other Nordic students and BOVA students - accommodation costs (to be announced later). Other Baltic students and students from developing countries - 200 € NOVA standard course fee + accommodation costs (to be announced later). Students from other countries, research institutes and industry - full course fee 500 € + accommodation costs (to be announced later). NOTE that in addition students must find funds to cover the flights to Ethiopia and back (approx. 900 €), visa (approx. 22 €) and personal travel insurance required from each participant.
Malaria prophylaxis and necessary vaccinations are recommended and on each participants own responsibility. Note that a certificate of vaccination is required from participants arriving from countries where yellow fever occurs.
